Both are supplied in rolls and differ mainly in their manufacturing process and in their tolerances in terms of diameter and ovality.
Wire/ Wire Rod
Wire rod comes from hot-rolled steel and has a solid cross-section that can be round, elliptical or polygonal. It is supplied in coils and must have a nominal diameter of 5 mm or greater, making it a common raw material for subsequent wire drawing, rolling or mechanical processing.
Wire also has a solid cross-section, but it is obtained through cold deformation processes such as drawing, wire drawing or rolling of the wire rod itself. It is also usually supplied in coils.
There are two main properties that differentiate between the different types of wire rod and wire:
• Nominal diameter
• Ovality
These characteristics determine the end use of the material and its suitability for each industrial process.
